The Lifelong Pursuit of Sobriety and the Value of a Continuum of Care

continuum-of-care

For years, 30 days of drug and alcohol addiction treatment was the standard. Facilities took a “one month and you’re cured!” approach before sending patients back into civilian life. Anyone who has struggled with drug or alcohol addiction can plainly see why this model was ineffective. It takes longer than a mere 30 days – plus a continuum of care – to break the habit of addiction.

We hear the phrase “continuum of care” used a lot in drug rehab, but what exactly does that mean? When we admit an individual for drug treatment at Boulder addiction rehab center, they start with our 90-day treatment program, but it doesn’t stop there. Following primary treatment we recommend our IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program), which offers outpatient rehab plus individual and group therapy geared towards helping men struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Individuals have the option to live in our structured sober living homes as an additional transitionary step before returning to normal life.

After leaving drug rehab, the continuum of care does not need to end – nor should it. Integrating the following care method into your life are crucial for maintaining long-term sobriety:

  • Personal Support System. Surround yourself with friends and family members who understand just how hard you’ve worked to achieve sobriety. Make sure your personal support system respects your decision to stay sober and does not use drugs either.
  • 12-Step Program. The 12-Step Program has an extensive community that goes beyond initial rehab. The program is full of individuals who have been in each other’s shoes and can offer continual support on the journey to lifelong sobriety.
  • Alumni Activities. The men of Choice House form a powerful brotherhood during their time in drug and alcohol treatment. We encourage these friendships to continue beyond rehab through our various alumni program.

This continuum of care provides numerous benefits, including a strong foundation for long-term sobriety. The continuum also offers extended encouragement through life’s difficult moments and accountability to live sober.
