overview

The addiction recovery process comprises many paths. However, today that path is more likely to include treatment for a co-occurring disorder, as an overwhelming amount of medical evidence shows that mental illness and addiction go hand in hand. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that half of those with a substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mental health disorder, and vice versa.

Although co-occurring disorders are relatively common, a person's history of substance abuse and their treatment needs are both unique and complex. Successful recovery requires a deep understanding of their situation and an individualized treatment plan that encompasses the underlying mental, physical and emotional aspects of addiction. Otherwise, the likelihood of relapse rises significantly in the days or weeks after rehab.

That’s why at Choice House, we treat the whole person to give each individual the best chance at lasting recovery. We consistently see mental health and substance abuse disorders together, so we’ve developed evidence-based programming that addresses both concurrently. This concept is known as dual diagnosis treatment, and it’s been found to greatly increase the quality of care and improve long-term outcomes.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Our experienced clinical team is well-versed in co-occurring disorders and can help individuals start to heal with proven treatments, experiential therapies and an outdoor component you won’t find elsewhere, providing a unique and powerful experience for men in recovery.

dual diagnosis treatment – understanding the need

When it comes to addiction and mental health, it can be difficult to tell which came first – a “chicken or the egg” scenario. In some cases, mental illness results from changes in the brain that occur from drug or alcohol abuse. In others, a person turns to drugs and alcohol in an attempt to cope with a pre-existing mental condition. Either way, both sides of the coin are examined during dual diagnosis treatment to provide the best outcome.

This whole-person approach is critical to ensuring the health, wellness and continued sobriety of those in recovery. Beneath the surface, most addicts are just trying to deal with the symptoms of anxiety, depression or trauma that too often go untreated, but lack the coping skills to do so without drugs or alcohol. Our goal is to give them the tools to better manage their mental health and adopt a healthier lifestyle free from substance abuse.

Dual diagnosis care is a tremendously important aspect of drug and alcohol addiction treatment here at Choice House in Boulder, Colorado. We know that addressing addiction and mental illness together can lead to a more effective recovery and reduce the risk of chronic relapse.

Choice House utilizes a number of proven methods to treat both addiction and mental illness. Our medical and psychiatric services are backed by a team of qualified professionals with diverse backgrounds, all of whom are extensively trained to manage co-occurring disorders. Each individual receives a highly personalized treatment plan to help them recognize and overcome the trauma, pain points and unhealthy beliefs that drive addictive behavior. Then, we give them a new way of living that’s built on a strong foundation of recovery.

Some of the therapeutic methods that we use include:

In addition to the outstanding support provided by our clinical team, each client meets with our medical director upon admission. The client will furthermore be seen by a medical provider on a weekly basis while in our residential program. If necessary, psychiatric evaluations will be completed in addition to medical evaluations, and medications (that do not have a propensity for addiction) can be prescribed and managed for mental health issues.

“The holistic approach that includes nature therapy sets Choice House apart from other programs; helping my son “get back into his body” and heal at a deeper level. Today, because of the professionalism, expertise, compassion, and care we have our son back. When we express our gratitude each day, Choice House is always top of the list.”

but wait… there’s more

what mental illnesses occur alongside drug and alcohol addiction?
